Object Summary
A Royal Copenhagen porcelain plate depicting the historic Danish Deaconess Foundation in Copenhagen, framed by trees and rendered in detailed sepia transfer print. Produced as a commemorative institutional piece during the mid-20th century, the plate carries the restrained elegance and craftsmanship associated with Danish porcelain tradition.
Originally intended as a commemorative keepsake, it is reimagined here as a refined vessel for feline dining rituals.
Archive Description
Founded in 1863, the Danish Deaconess Foundation (Den Danske Diakonissestiftelse) in Copenhagen became one of Denmark’s most respected religious and medical institutions. The foundation operated hospitals, nursing education programs, and charitable services, and its main complex in Frederiksberg remains an architectural landmark.
Royal Copenhagen produced commemorative porcelain pieces for institutions like this throughout the 20th century. These objects were often presented to visitors, staff members, or benefactors as refined mementos representing Danish craftsmanship and civic heritage.
This plate belongs to that tradition.
At its center appears a finely rendered architectural scene depicting the historic foundation buildings framed by mature trees and landscaped grounds. The image is executed in monochrome transfer print, a technique widely used by Royal Copenhagen for architectural commemoratives.
Encircling the scene is a hand-applied gold rim, creating a subtle visual frame around the architecture while reinforcing the plate’s ceremonial origin.
The underside bears the Royal Copenhagen crown mark above the three-wave symbol, indicating Danish manufacture, along with the inscription “DEN DANSKE DIAKONISSESTIFTELSE.”
Though originally intended as a commemorative porcelain plate, its shallow form and balanced proportions lend themselves naturally to new domestic rituals.
Suggested Use
Food Vessel
The plate’s shallow bowl form makes it particularly well suited for serving wet food or soft meals.
The wide diameter allows comfortable eating posture while reducing whisker contact, and the smooth porcelain surface remains naturally hygienic and easy to clean.
The architectural scene at the centre adds a quiet narrative to the object; turning an ordinary feeding moment into a small domestic ceremony.
