The Long Sentinel
Object Summary
A stylized wooden cat sculpture inspired by the iconic mid-century feline figures originally designed by Danish ceramicist Gunnar Flørning. This modern interpretation translates the beloved Scandinavian form into turned wood, with elongated proportions, metal whiskers, and contrasting natural wood accents.
The result is a playful yet restrained object that echoes the quiet humour and elegance of Nordic design.
Archive Description
During the mid-20th century, Danish ceramicist Gunnar Flørning (1919–1979) produced a series of stylized animal figures while working with Søholm Stentøj on the island of Bornholm. His cats—characterized by elongated necks, simplified forms, and expressive whiskers—became some of the most recognizable animal designs of Scandinavian studio ceramics.
This object draws inspiration from that tradition.
Rather than ceramic, this version is crafted in wood: a matte black body rising into a spherical head with exaggerated whiskers radiating outward in thin metal wires. The muzzle and feet are left in natural wood, creating a gentle contrast against the dark body.
The proportions are intentionally exaggerated. The long tapered body elevates the head above the surface like a watchful guardian—part sculpture, part character.
The underside is marked “1952 – Gunnar Flørning”, referencing the year associated with the original design lineage rather than the production date of this wooden edition.
Within the home, the object functions less as decoration and more as quiet companionship: a small sentinel observing the room with patient curiosity.

Companion Object
While not a vessel, this figure holds an important place within the domestic landscape of Approved by Marx.
Placed beside feeding vessels, on shelves, or near resting spaces, it acts as a symbolic guardian of feline rituals within the home.
Its elongated silhouette adds vertical presence to surfaces otherwise occupied by bowls and ceramics—bringing a subtle sense of narrative to the space.
For households shaped by cats, it feels less like decoration and more like representation.
