Archive Description

During the mid-20th century Royal Copenhagen expanded beyond porcelain into a series of studio stoneware works that explored heavier forms, tactile surfaces, and natural glazes. These pieces balanced the company’s long tradition of craftsmanship with the emerging language of Scandinavian modern design.

This square vessel reflects that moment. Its broad frame surrounds a recessed interior panel pressed with nine repeating geometric motifs, each slightly softened by the kiln firing process. The relief pattern creates a quiet rhythm across the surface while allowing the glaze to pool and shift in tone.

The glaze itself moves between muted olive, soft grey, and darker edges where the kiln heat deepened the colour. Along the rim the glaze breaks subtly, revealing the warmth of the clay body beneath — a hallmark of Danish studio stoneware.

Marked on the underside with the Royal Copenhagen crown mark and production number 21872, the piece belongs to the company’s stoneware studio line produced during the 1960s and 1970s.

Originally intended as a serving dish, the object now enters a quieter domestic role — one that reflects the calm rituals of life shared with a cat.
