Object Summary

A navy and white enamel bowl produced by Cathrineholm of Norway, distinguished by its bold vertical stripe pattern and clean Scandinavian geometry. Manufactured during the height of Nordic modernism in the mid-20th century, the piece reflects the graphic simplicity and durability that made Cathrineholm enamelware internationally recognized.

Originally designed for the human kitchen, it is reimagined here as a refined vessel for feline rituals.

Archive Description

Cathrineholm of Halden, Norway became one of the defining producers of Scandinavian enamelware during the 1950s and 1960s. Their steel vessels coated in brightly colored enamel brought modern design into everyday kitchens across Europe and North America.

This bowl belongs to that design tradition.

The form is simple and balanced: a shallow curved vessel whose exterior is wrapped in deep navy vertical stripes over a white enamel body. The pattern radiates around the bowl with quiet precision, giving the object a graphic presence that remains instantly recognizable within Scandinavian modern design.

The enamel coating is fired over a steel core, creating a durable and non-porous surface originally intended for food preparation. This technique allowed Cathrineholm pieces to combine industrial practicality with strong visual identity.

The underside bears the original mark “CATHRINEHOLM OF NORWAY”, confirming production from the mid-20th century period when the company’s enamelware achieved international success.

The result is an object that feels both domestic and architectural; a humble kitchen vessel elevated through color, form, and restraint.

Suggested Use

Water Vessel

Originally made for the Norwegian table, this bowl adapts naturally to feline use.

The curved interior allows water to gather toward the center while keeping the surface wide and accessible. The steel core gives the object reassuring weight, helping prevent movement during drinking.

Enamel remains naturally hygienic and easy to clean, while the bold navy stripes introduce a subtle visual rhythm to the space around it.

A functional object that turns hydration into a small daily ritual.
